This webinar provides an overview of FEMA’s recent update to the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) flood insurance risk rating methodology (Risk Rating 2.0). This methodology applies to all new or renewing flood insurance policies and more accurately reflects a property’s unique flood risk by considering a broader range of variables. This presentation highlights what is and isn’t changing under Risk Rating 2.0. The second part of the webinar explores Hampton NH’s work in developing higher regulatory building standards for structures within flood-prone areas as a strategy for adapting to more frequent high-tide flooding and worsening coastal storms.
NH’s Salt Marsh Birds and Their Conservation

Salt marshes are a unique habitat found only in a narrow fringe where the ocean meets the land. They are important as nurseries for a variety of marine organisms and provide habitat for a number of breeding and migratory birds. In this webinar, Dr. Pamela Hunt, Senior Biologist in Avian Conservation with NH Audubon discusses the different types of migratory and nesting birds that visit the Hampton-Seabrook saltmarsh and the challenges this important habitat is facing.

Scott Bogle, Senior Transportation Planner for the Rockingham Planning Commission provides an update on the progress made toward completing the highly-anticipated coastal rail trail in New Hampshire. Scott also reviews the time line for the project and descriptions of the challenges ahead. He also discussed the unique opportunity to have a portion of the rail trail cross the salt marsh in the Hampton-Seabrook Estuary.

This workshop will help local property owners know how to prepare for anticipated floods, including what resources to use to track incoming floods, what supplies to have on hand, how to prepare your yard and structure for flooding, what to do if you choose to evacuate, what to do if you choose to shelter in place, and how to deal with post-flood damage. Presenters will include members of the Hampton, Hampton Falls, and Seabrook Emergency Management Teams, This is important information that every property owner, resident, and local business owner should have.
Salt Marsh Ditching

A virtual presentation and discussion about salt marsh ditching. We will explore the history behind why ditching occurred and view some of the tools used to create the ditches. We’ll learn about the unintended impacts of these efforts and hear from local experts on salt marsh habitat and ecology about techniques being used to help restore these areas. Our guest speakers include Dr. David Burdick and Dr. Gregg Moore, UNH Associate Research Professors; Dr. Alyson Eberhardt, Coastal Ecosystems Specialist with NH Sea Grant & UNH Extension; Kevin Lucey, Habitat Coordinator for NHDES Coastal Program; and Eric Small, President of the Seabrook Historical Society and Author.
